Country Church of San Sebastiano

Located in the countryside surrounding the town of Teti, in a large clearing shaded by holm oaks and downy oaks, the recently renovated country church of San Sebastiano is open for worship as well as public and private events. This ancient church shares many similarities with the Sanctuary of San Mauro in Sorgono located nearby: despite the latter being a more majestic and complex building, both of them were built in Catalan gothic style with some classical and mannerist features.

The main faƧade – a plain-looking rectangular wall crowned by a small bell gable (the original bronze bell had the inscription S. SEBASDIAN + 1737) – hides a pitched roof. The side walls are supported by buttresses made of local stone. The wooden entrance door and lintels, carved with Catalan gothic motifs, are crowned by a relieving round arch, with a small niche at the centre. Higher still is a stone rose window with small columns and pointed arches.

The interior is plain, with cotto floors and plastered walls. The barrel-vaulted ceiling over the nave is divided into three bays ending with the presbytery; the last bay is flanked by two large niches crowned by a round arch with exposed ashlar stonework. Inside the niches are two secondary masonry altars, whereas the main altar is made of granite. On the back wall is an aedicule housing the statue of Saint Sebastian and framed by two semi-columns and a triangular tympanum. The two small square windows on the sides, along with the rose window and the small secondary entrance door, provide the only source of natural light.
